Even before running against Senator Ted Cruz in 2017, O’Rourke began participating in politics in his El Paso, Texas hometown. Although O’Rourke was considered a “long shot” in Texas politics, he has become a media darling for the Democratic Party on a national level.

Biography: Early Life and Family

The elder O’Rourke was also active in politics; he assisted presidential candidate Jesse Jackson as a state chairman of Jackson’s 1984 and 1988 campaigns. He was born in El Paso, Texas, on September 26, 1972. His father, Pat, served as a county commissioner and county judge. In 1984, Jackson held a press conference at O’Rourke’s home. He was also closely associated with Mark White, former governor of Texas.

His nickname primarily knows him. While some of his Republican opponents claim that O’Rourke had the nickname “Beto” because he was seeking Hispanic constituents, O’Rourke claims his family gave him the moniker as a baby to distinguish his name from his grandfather, for whom he was named.

During college, O’Rourke’s love of music prompted him to begin playing live music in two different bands. While at Columbia University, O’Rourke joined a band called Swipe. The band played New York City bars and clubs; at one point, Swipe opened for Fitz of Depression from Washington state. Following graduation, O’Rourke formed the band Foss with two friends at Columbia (they were all from El Paso). In addition to touring across North America, the group also released a demo entitled “The El Paso Pussycats.”
